Average Annual Expenditures of an American Family

Average Annual Expenditures of an American Family

The expense categories in the adjacent pie chart are further dissected below into its respective categories and subcategories. Each category represents the percentage of spending for that category by the average American family (a 'Consumer Unit'[1] as described by the U.S. Census Bureau[2]). This data set is placed here for further discussion, analysis and dissection by githy.com's members and readers.

This data set (like other's on githy.com) is being actively combined with other pieces of relevant information. For example, drilling down into housing expenses you will see that electricity makes up about 2.8% of the average U.S. 'Consumer Unit' budget. But, to estimate the cost of each individual appliance, we integrated another data set we had on our site that pertains to residential electricity consumption - while clearly documenting the source of each data item to avoid confusion.

There are countless reasons a person may study the spending habits of American consumers that range from economic policy, to personal-budget comparison, to environmental concerns, etc. As such, there are countless logical paths that this data set may be integrated with in the future.
